This tableware project began about seven years ago with the simple idea of filling my cabinets with handmade bowls and plates. It became something else along the way.

About the work

I mostly hand-build (vs. throw) and focus on inlaying multiple clay bodies together to draw patterns. Often times the patterns start as a drawing or painting, so there is some conversation between the two and three dimensional. I don’t build using repeatable nerikomi blocks, so each piece is unique. This process is time-consuming yet opens up opportunities for improvisation, accident, and importantly elements that I cannot control.

I developed these techniques through experimentation, and have been working within this series for about eight years. There is something incredibly compelling in making art that people use and touch every day.
